SNP Minister Kate Forbes celebrates her wedding anniversary with a visit to the Ross County Stadium

SNP Minister Kate Forbes married her fiancé Alasdair MacLennan today at a service in Dingwall.

The Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Economics visited Victoria Park, home of Premiership club Ross County FC, for photos after the ceremony.

Family and friends were present at the ceremony, and due to number restrictions, the wedding was also broadcast live on the internet so that other well-wishers could experience the happy occasion.

Kate and Alasdair – known as Ali – had announced their engagement earlier this year.

Forbes said, “We are very excited to be married to some friends and family. Many have been watching online instead of joining us in person due to Covid-19 restrictions.

“After 18 months, which were difficult for everyone, our wedding day was full of joy. We hope that other couples will enjoy the same happy day, despite all the worries and frustrations of planning a wedding with limitations. ”

Forbes, 31, is named one day by some within the SNP as a potential successor to Nicola Sturgeon.

First elected to Holyrood as MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch in 2016, she quickly made a name for herself on the corridors of power.

Forbes was catapulted into national attention in February 2020 when the first minister handed her the job of finance secretary just hours before the Scottish government was due to present its annual budget to the MSPs.

The sudden promotion was caused by the unexpected resignation of Derek Mackay, who resigned after a newspaper announced that he had sent hundreds of text messages to a 16-year-old boy.

Sturgeon gave Forbes a beefed up role in May when the SNP leader moved her cabinet after the party’s election victory in Holyrood.

Forbes grew up partially in India after her parents traveled there as missionaries when she was just six weeks old. She is a member of the Free Church of Scotland, which follows a strict interpretation of the Bible.

She is against gay marriage and believes that there are few circumstances in which an abortion is warranted.

In an interview with the BBC earlier this year, Forbes said she never tried to hide her beliefs.

But she said she was “as guilty as anyone of walking around on tiptoe” out of “fear and a feeling that the public will think that we are only speaking for our own, not everyone”.

Forbes said, “To be honest, I believe in the person of Jesus Christ.

“I believe that he died for me, he saved me and that it is my calling to serve and love him and to serve and love my neighbors with all my heart and soul, mind and strength.

“This is essential for me to be. Politics will pass – I am a person before I was a politician, and this person will continue to believe that I was made in God’s image.”

She added: “Some of them will agree with my policies, others will disagree. Some will agree with my beliefs, others will disagree.

“I have a duty to represent them, but I don’t want to deceive my constituents either, and I think it’s really important to be honest with them about my beliefs, identity and background.”
