Joey Mawson, the first Australian S5000 Drivers’ Champion, had his first test on a Supercars Championship machine a couple of weeks ago and declared that it was easier to handle than he expected.
Mawson got to test drive a Brad Jones Racing Supercar at Winton Motor Raceway during the team’s annual Rookie Test Day late last year.
Mawson was one of several drivers in attendance including Aaron Borg and BJR Super3 driver Elly Morrow.
Globally, the supercar is notoriously difficult to drive, but Mawson said he expected it to be deadlier than it was and was pleased at how quickly he came to terms with the ZB Commodore.
“It was very, very cool. Everything in the car was more than I expected or imagined,” Mawson told AUTO ACTION.
“The grip the car had was better than I expected, the braking was actually a lot better for the weight of the car, the performance was very nice and linear compared to the S5000.
“Everything on the car was basically set up better than I had imagined, it was actually a very pleasant test.”
Mawson said he had quite a bit of time in the car and really got a handle on how the car felt compared to his team BRM S5000 monster.
“They (supercars) are quite a different beast to drive than the S5000, but I was surprised that I was able to get used to the car pretty well and pretty quickly, from scratch,” he continued.
“It’s not the easiest track in the world, it’s quite technical and narrow, especially for a supercar.
“It’s a handful to get around there so I had a really good test with BJR.
“I probably did 20 laps all day, good to get an experience and a taste and I hope to do a few more laps in the future.
“Great to do my first laps in the Supercar and grateful that his team gave me the opportunity to do my first laps in the V8.”
The former podium finisher in the GP3 series (now known as the FIA Formula 3 Championship) and Porsche Supercup explained the test came about after a brief chat at Sydney Motorsport Park.
In the latest issue of AA, Mawson explains how he ended his international ambitions.
“The obvious plan is to stay in Australia for the next few years and then make a living racing supercars, which is the pinnacle of motorsport in Australia,” said Mawson.
“Hopefully I want to be there in a few years.”
