Man’s June wedding day ended with him stabbed in the leg at Hyde Park dive; he’s still out of work and needs more surgery

A man who got married on June 23 agreed to go out with a friend for a celebratory drink that night. They wound up at the Cavan Cafe, 1464 Hyde Park Ave. in Hyde Park – where the two got stabbed in the parking lot by a guy who followed them out after they left, not long after they arrived, then decided to call it a night.

The newlywed, who had never even been to the Cavan before, told the Boston Licensing Board this morning he’s been unable to return to work because of the injuries he suffered getting stabbed in the right thigh: He had surgery after the stabbing and has another operation scheduled. His friend, police say, was stabbed in the left leg.

According to the victim and the bartender, the two friends came in and ordered a drink – the man a bottle of beer. They hadn’t even finished their drinks when they went outside. The bartender told the board she left their drinks alone, she figured they were just going outside for a smoke.

The bartender said it was a calm, convivial night at the Cavan. She the two guys even chatted with other customers – including one man who was playing pool. “Everybody was having a nice time,” she said.

The newly wedded man said he noticed his friend was already drunk and decided he’d had enough and wanted to leave before he’d even finished his beer, so they headed out to the bar parking lot, across tiny A Street.

Accounts varied as to what the pool player did when the two left. The newly betrothed man said the guy immediately followed him and his friend outside, the bartender said he finished his pool game and then, five to ten minutes later, left as well.

The victim said that as he and his friend were out in the parking lot, the pool player approached them, with a full head of angry steam: “He was talking about somebody going to get murdered, and I turned around and I got poked, ” he said, adding he doesn’t know why the man decided to stab him and his friend.

The bartender said she had no idea blood was being spilled outside – because she thought the guys were just going out for a smoke, she wasn’t watching the feed from the camera the bar has pointed at the lot. Then a regular called the bar phone and told her she’d better get outside, because there was “a scuffle” at the rear of the lot. She rushed outside, said the two freshly stabbed men, with one of them talking to the police on his phone. She said she grabbed the phone to tell police the bar’s address when it seemed like the call taker was having trouble figuring out where the Cavan was.

Police said they have yet to apprehend the suspect.

The bartender said the guy police said stabbed the other two men “used to come into the bar.”

The board decides Thursday whether the Cavan could have done anything to prevent the double stabbing and, if so, whether any sanction is warranted.
