Co Tyrone couple join their wedding band for a few tunes at Belfast Castle

A Co Tyrone couple, who played music together in front of a crowd for the first time at their wedding, have spoken about what it meant to them.

Eunan and Lucy Anderson got married at Belfast Castle on Saturday July 17th after coronavirus restrictions caused it to be postponed from May.

The two are both musicians, with Eunan playing the violin while Lucy has been a drummer for 17 years. They both “live and breathe music,” with a large part of their relationship being a shared love of going to gigs – the others, too – and listening to music.

Thankfully, restrictions had eased to allow live music on their big day, which meant they could include a live band in their wedding plans.

They booked Act Juke, close friends of theirs who first formed in 2018 and regularly play at popular Belfast venues including The Thirsty Goat, The Dirty Onion and Henry’s.

Eunan was no stranger to playing with the boys, having previously filled them in for live sets.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Eunan from Pomeroy said: “It was you who said to me, ‘Eunan, you know that someday you will get up and play with us.’ So I finished the violin and said to the drummer Darragh, ‘Call Lucy when I go up, she’ll definitely go up and play.’

“If I had told her beforehand that she would be promoted, she would have said no. We were all peer pressure on them. It was brilliant. “

Lucy agreed, adding, “No, I definitely wouldn’t have done it if you had said it beforehand! I needed someone who could make me do it, to be honest. “

Yukes drummer Darragh Tracey stated that they “wanted to do whatever it takes to make sure they had a fantastic day,” and having them in the band for a few tunes was part of that.

But it all came together when he accidentally stumbled upon a picture of Lucy playing the drums at a gig.

Darragh said, “Eunan has shown his incredible violin skills on several occasions and when he asked us to perform at his wedding, it didn’t even have to be said that he would be standing next to us in suit and violin, absolutely blasting tunes like he always does does.

“It wasn’t until maybe a week before the wedding that I saw a picture of Lucy on Instagram with Lucy playing the drums at a Battle of the Bands, and I immediately texted the Juke boys to say we’d raise them that day on stage.

“Eunan came up to us as we all knew he would and did his thing for a few numbers and then Brent announced – without telling her beforehand – that Lucy would be on stage with us for a few songs We could immediately see that it was her. ” Shocked, but under the thunderous applause and cheers of the wedding guests, she had no choice but to get up and join us.

“And honestly, she smashed it. The crowd went crazy and the two performed, completely unstudied and unprepared, as if they had been in a band for years. As I said at the time: “Couples who rock together, roll together”.

“It was amazing for us to play another wedding, but sharing that moment with a newlyweds made it even more fantastic.”
