After an outstanding performance from the end of the grid in the previous Supercars round, Chaz Mostert is hoping for the same wet weather conditions when the Sydney SuperSprint kicks off on Saturday.
Mostert was banned from qualifying for Race 25 due to a technical defect, but that didn’t stop the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver from finding his way through heavy rain and the field last Sunday.
The 2014 Bathurst 1000 winner says his rainy weather package along with his team was great and a third straight lap at Sydney Motorsport Park would be even better if they could stick to it.
“We got a pretty quick package in the wet weather,” said Mostert on Friday.
“So if it rains this weekend we feel like we’re going to have a good performance, but of course we want to keep working on our drying package and move forward.
“It’s a pretty unique place here.
“Some super fast cars out there, some super fast young guys out there who keep all of us older guys honest so that they’re the guys we need to chase.
“We’ll see how it goes this weekend.”
Fourth in the championship standings – 519 points behind leader Shane van Gisbergen with Jamie Whincup second and Will Davison third – Mostert said a consistent weekend could put him in the battle for a podium with three laps left.
“We have to qualify better and if you qualify when the cars are there you can hold out,” he said.
“But we just got too far back in the last two weeks in the dry race.
“So yeah, a lap pace is our only focus this weekend.”
