The 2019 Supercars Championship at Phillip Island
The teams will only have brand new tires at the start of the Bunnings Trade Phillip Island SuperSprint, Supercars announced.
The decision is one of several updates to the tire regulations that the championship has confirmed after redesigning the back half of the calendar on their official website.
The newly added event at Phillip Island takes over the tire allocation that was mandated for the now-canceled Pukekohe weekend as both tracks require the tough mix due to their long, highly stressed corners.
As with the drive over the ditch, where the quarantine law prohibits the dispatch of pre-marked tires, eight new sets of tires are allocated to each car.
As is common with a SuperSprint event, multiple tires must be returned, in this case three sets, so each driver has five sets to survive three races and their respective qualifying sessions.
Winton, where the Repco Supercars Championship continues on October 2-3, retains the new Super Soft blend for 2021, which debuted in Darwin’s Hidden Valley in June.
In accordance with an earlier rule that ensured that the Queensland teams would compete on par with their southern counterparts at the Super Soft events, testing on this compound is prohibited until after the Winton SuperSprint.
The hard mix will also be used on the Repco Bathurst 1000, and it will be the soft on the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight and Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, as originally planned.
