Bride, whose vintage car breaks down on the way to the wedding, is taken away by the police

A woman about to hitchhike hadn’t expected to hitchhike to her own wedding.

Lydia Evans-Hughes needed police help to get her to the altar after the classic car she was bringing to church broke down on the side of a busy road.

The 29-year-old in her wedding dress made a noticeable sight on the side of the road with her parents Yvette and Alan Fletcher when they cursed the car which she said had “given up” after just five miles.

North Wales Police Inspector Matt Geddes stopped when he saw her on the A55 near Chester in northwest England and offered to get her to church on time.

His gesture meant she was making a more dramatic bridal appearance than usual, and the bridal shower arrived in a police car with flashing blue lights waiting at St Evans-Hughes, 31.

When offered the ride, Lydia Evans-Hughes of Wrexham, North Wales said, “This was the first time that I had tears of relief on the day,” Cheshire told Live.

“I was afraid that I would have to climb over the guardrail and stand on the side of the road,” she added.

“Because everything happened so quickly and how quickly they showed up, I wasn’t too late, you couldn’t have planned it better,” she said. “I’m just incredibly happy. All in all, it went really well.”

The COVID pandemic had already postponed their wedding twice and the blue light arrival on August 26th made the ceremony even more memorable.

“The most incredible and sincere thanks to the police. What would we have done without them?”

“The fact that we finally have our day and that everyone could be there is simply priceless,” she said, “it was such a beautiful end.

Traffic Wales tweeted about the incident and a picture of the bridal shower that was stranded on the highway as cars whizzed by.

“The course of true love never went smoothly,” she said, adding that traffic officials removed the vehicle while police took her to the ceremony. “I wish the bridal couple all the best!”

Geddes said he was “glad to have helped in a” stressful situation “for the bridal shower”.

“The bride looked beautiful, the sun was shining and she was just a little late. I wish the couple a wonderful day and a long and happy life together.”
