Firefighters help the bride, who is stuck in traffic after the Darlington A1 crash, to her wedding

They had already rescued two women who were trapped in a car after an accident involving three vehicles.

And then to top it off, these hero firefighters came to the rescue of a worried bride who was about to miss her wedding day.

At around 12 noon on Friday, the A1 was blocked near Darlington after a motorhome collided with two cars.

Among those trapped in the 10-mile backwater was a bridal shower, reports TeessideLive.

Only an hour before the big day began, the bridal carriage decorated with ribbons got stuck in a traffic jam.

Fortunately, however, after securing the area, rescue workers were able to let the car through before the road was fully cleared again.

Station manager Chris Hockaday of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Services said, “There was a lady in a car about 10 cars back in a traffic jam – which must have been five to ten miles.

“She would be married in an hour. All of her bridesmaids were there, some of them with curlers in their hair.

“We managed to get some of the engines moving so they could get through before we could open the road.

“Hopefully you weren’t too late.”

Two people were transported to Darlington Memorial Hospital after the crash, but reportedly no serious injuries.

Two fire engines and a special rescue unit took part in the accident, and firefighters cut off the roof and doors of one of the cars, a Hyundai, to rescue the two women.

A Durham Constabulary spokesman said: “We were called just before noon today for reports of a collision with three vehicles on the A1.

“The incident occurred on the southbound lane near Exit 58 and involved a Mazda RV, Hyundai i10 car and a Honda Civic car.

“Colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were also on site.

“The road was closed while two women were cut out of the Hyundai car, but it is not believed that there were any serious injuries.”

A detour was set up while the road was closed, but has since been reopened.
