The Newcastle 500 has officially been rescheduled with the Sydney SuperNight due to COVID-19 to become the opening event of the 2022 season. Supercars announced the postponement on Monday, which was due to “concerns about the number of COVID-19 cases in Newcastle” and the “ongoing uncertainty the virus is causing in parts of the local community”. “With the ever-evolving and unpredictable COVID situation, it has become too difficult to stage a complex, multi-faceted event on the streets of Newcastle for tens of thousands of racing fans in March,” said Shane Howard, CEO of Supercars. “Hosting an event of the scale of Newcastle in the heart of the CBD requires a tremendous amount of work to ensure it runs to world-class standards. “We have been in consultation with the City of Newcastle throughout January and understand that building and running an event of this size during the current COVID period has raised concerns in parts of the community’ event. The Newcastle round was in September, ahead of the Omicron outbreak in the region, closed for March 4-6 Supercars and Newcastle City Council had both indicated just a month ago the event was likely to go ahead and work would not last until Saturday, according to The Lord Mayor Newcastle Nuatali Nelmes said while the Newcastle 500 would have been subject to a strict COVID safety plan, it was the right decision to postpone the event as the community concerns remained high Situation in regular contact with Supercars We all agreed that at the moment and regardless of the additional precautions taken to drive the Newcastle 500 safely would be more confident for the rest of the year,” she said. The March event was intended to be the opening round of the Supercars Championship season for the first time, as opposed to the three rounds the city previously hosted at the end of the season. Supercars said the Newcastle 500 would be postponed “to a later date in 2022” but gave no indication if it would fill the now postponed Sydney SuperNight event dates of November 18-20. “As a street course built in the heart of the CBD, the [Newcastle] The event offers tremendous economic benefits to the region and we want to ensure that happens again in 2022,” said Shane Horward, CEO of Supercars. “We are working to confirm the new date as soon as possible. “We would like to thank our fans, volunteers, local businesses, Destination NSW, the NSW Office of Sport and the City of Newcastle for their continued support. We will be able to do this successfully later in the year.” IN THE NEWS: Our journalists are working hard to bring local, provide breaking news to the community.
