SUPERCARS CALENDAR 2022 IS COMING

By Mark Fogarty

The Supercars calendar for next year will be drawn up in early August.

The teams will receive the schedule for 2022 in six to eight weeks, so discussions and debates are possible before completion.

Supercars will try to announce the calendar in September or early October.

It is already known that the 2022 season will start with the revived Newcastle 500 in late February or early March.

Another important date will be the Sydney SuperNight in August, which is slated to be the debut of the Gen3 transition.

In the midst of this year’s COVID uncertainties, Supercars supremo Sean Seamer has confirmed that preparations are underway for the hopefully undisturbed season next year.

“I can tell you we have already started planning,” said Seamer. “We are about three or four weeks preparing for next year’s calendar. As expected, we have started to consult with each of the route owners and the relevant state authorities. “

He re-confirmed that the 2022 season would start with the restored Newcastle 500, which was discontinued last year and this season due to the coronavirus crisis.

It replaces the Adelaide 500, which was canceled by the South Australian government.

“We look forward to starting the season in Newcastle for the first time, which will be good,” said Seamer.

“Additionally, there are a few other dependencies that we need to finalize – namely the AGP appointment – but we hope to be able to publish a draft of the calendar to the teams in the next six to eight weeks and from there we can walk.”

He was referring to whether next year’s F1 Australian Grand Prix will be in March or next November.

Supercars are also still considering reintroducing several endurance races in 2022.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Bathurst 1000 was the only two-rider event last year and is slated to be the only Enduro this season.

Seamer acknowledged that a re-launch of the Enduro Cup next year would depend on teams’ readiness after the mid-season launch of Gen3.

“That is certainly something that we will be discussing with the (rule-making supercars) commission and what it might look like at Bathurst,” he said.

“Ultimately, it comes down to the laps around Bathurst and the convenience of preparing for endurance racing on the Gen3 platform, given the introduction so close to Bathurst.”

He suggested that 10,000 test kilometers with the introduction of Gen3 could make additional long-distance races with two drivers possible.

“The teams would have opened an extensive test window at the beginning of the year so that we can have all our tests carried out before (Bathurst).”

Prior to the outbreak of the pandemic last year, supercars traditionally held three events with two drivers per year.

Most recently, the Enduro Cup included the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast 600 double race.

The Bathurst 1000 from October 7th to 10th is also this season the only enduro with two riders.
