Keep an eye on the price! Wedding Crashers taught a generation of moviegoers that parties are most fun when you don’t know anyone.
Released in July 2005, the film follows two divorce brokers – John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Gray (Vince Vaughn) – attending weddings of strangers to pick up women. They work out very well until they meet Claire Cleary (Rachel McAdams) and her sister Gloria (Isla Fisher), the daughters of an intimidating politician, played by Christopher Walken.
The idea for the film came from the producer Andrew Panayalthough his inspiration came from a wedding he was actually invited to. “I got the idea for Wedding Crashers because I was in my mid-twenties preparing for a wedding and for some reason I was excited,” he told MEL magazine in 2017. “I thought, ‘Why am I? I’m so excited for that? ‘ and the truth was, I thought I might meet a girl. “
The premise was well received by the audience and the film became a surprise hit despite its R rating. Fans have long been hoping for a sequel. In June 2021, Wilson offered a glimmer of hope – and revealed that there had been talks about a second round.
“Yes, there is a script and David Dobkin – who directed the first film – worked on it and we talked about it, ”the French Dispatch actor told Collider at the time. “Vince was nice to talk to, and it’s one of those films that people really seemed to touch. If we can think of something that we think could be great, then we will surely do it. “
In June 2020, Dobkin stated that part of the delay in writing a script for the sequel was due to the fact that he and the producers struggled to come up with a unique story that made sense to the characters as they grew older. “Neither of us wanted to retread the same movie again,” he told Collider. “Everything we talked about for the first few years was the same movie and we thought, ‘Why?’ Financially, I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I did. And Vince and Owen didn’t want it either. “
If there is a sequel, it remains to be seen whether John and Jeremy will still be with Claire and Gloria. If so, they need to find some other purpose for their wedding crash – or maybe the girls go along with it.
