4 dead in Nashville Floods, hundreds trapped in cars, homes

Four people have been confirmed dead in the Nashville, Tennessee area after the area was inundated by the heaviest one-day March rainfall in the state’s history. At least 130 people trapped in cars, apartments and houses had to be rescued from fast water by rescue workers as a result of the heavy downpour, Nashville Fire Department spokesman Joseph Pleasant told The Tennessean. During the heavy weather, 911 drivers made an emergency call every 19 seconds, the newspaper reported. “The rainfall we had yesterday and overnight made this one of the wettest 24-hour periods in Nashville history,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Sam Shamburger. “It is the worst flood event that we have seen since the flood in May 2010. The main difference, however, is that this event affected a much smaller area than the 2010 flood. “
