As the federal government is taking steps to make electric cars better known, so is the city of Morganton.

Three electric vehicle charging stations will soon be home in Morganton – one slower charging station and two fast charging stations, said Phillip Lookadoo, director of development and design for the city of Morganton.

The fast charging stations, which will cost about $ 140,000 each, will be funded primarily through a state grant that will be made available after the state settles a lawsuit against Volkswagen, Lookadoo said. One of the stops is on North College Street in Martha’s Park and the other is on Bush Drive by Starbucks.

The other charging station, which will be located at the Burke County Chamber of Commerce on East Meeting Street, is funded in part by a Smart Communities Grant from ElectriCities. The remainder of the funding, just over $ 6,000, will be paid for by the city, according to Lookadoo and information previously provided by the city.

The quick charging points can provide a full charge in 60-90 minutes depending on the vehicle, Lookadoo said, while the other charging point would take around four hours to fully charge someone.

“As part of ElectriCities … as a city of power plants … we are interested in encouraging electricity usage, and I also think this is a response to the market,” said Lookadoo. “You see a lot more electric vehicles being advertised every day. All you have to do is log into the internet … for a while we saw the Ford Lightning, you saw GMC put them on the market, Toyota on the market, all the other manufacturers put them in. “
