New Opel Rocks-e electric car revealed: price, technical data and release date

The Opel Rocks-e is a tiny little electric city car that even drives a 15 year old car. Unfortunately it is not intended for the UK. Read on to find out all the details.

  • Opel Rocks-e unveiled
  • Based on Citroen Ami
  • 5.5 kWh battery offers 47 miles of range
  • 8 hp engine, 45 km / h top speed
  • Two-seater layout
  • Initially only for the German market
  • No plans to launch in the UK

The Opel Rocks-e is a tiny little city car based on the Citroen Ami. It offers two seats and just enough range and power for short trips through a city or suburb.

It will initially be launched in Germany this autumn – where 15-year-olds with a car driver’s license can legally drive it – and will be expanded to other markets in 2022. However, there are no plans to bring him to the UK as Vauxhall.

New Opel Rocks-e design

There are compact cars, city cars, and small city cars. Then there is the Opel Rocks-e, 1.39 meters wide and 2.41 meters long, this tiny car is 0.285 meters shorter than a Smart EQ fortwo and over a meter shorter than a “normal” city car like a Kia Picanto.

A set of large black bumpers dominates the front and rear of the car, with tiny 14-inch wheels on each corner. The doors are almost as wide as the wheelbase and the driver’s door is hinged at the back. Funky yellow details under the door sills and bumpers balance the black and gray color of this particular specimen.

The cab offers the bare minimum of features, with a small digital driver display and a dashboard space to mount your phone.

There is practical storage space over the entire length of the dashboard and the passenger footwell is extra deep and also serves as storage space for shopping bags. Colored door hinges and top-hung windows that can be folded outwards are as luxurious as they can be.

New Opel Rocks-e batteries and range

The Opel Rocks-e shares its mechanical and electrical bits with the Citroen Ami. That means an 8-horsepower electric motor is paired with a 5.5 kWh battery that offers a range of up to 48 miles.

This is slightly above the Ami’s 44-mile range, likely because the Rocks-e weighs a few pounds less.

A top speed of 45 km / h should be enough to get you down the crowded city streets or to go to the shops. The advantage of such a small battery is that it can be fully charged in around 3.5 hours from a normal household socket.

Opel Rocks-e price and release date

The Opel Rocks-e will hit the streets in Germany this fall, with sales in other markets starting in 2022, but that doesn’t include the UK. The Citroen Ami is a virtually identical offering that could be offered in the UK in the near future.

In other markets, it costs the equivalent of around £ 5,500, so expect the Opel Rocks-e to be similarly expensive.
