Apollo enters the ranks of electric cars with a new luxury sedan

Apollo Automobil – formerly known as Gumpert – has announced plans to join the ranks of electric cars with a luxury sedan at China International Import Expo 2021.

The stylish EVision S, which is due to be delivered to customers in 2023, is one of several models that the newly founded EV offshoot of the German super sports car manufacturer, the Apollo Future Mobility Group, has developed after extensive investments and acquisitions in recent years.

Described as the “progressive showcase of Apollo Automobiles vision for the future of electric mobility,” the EVision S concept was designed to be more user-friendly and practical than the company’s supercars.

The exterior embodies what Apollo calls its Fast Forward design language, with a coupe-like profile, heavily textured surfaces and distinctive details, including hockey stick headlights and a continuous taillight bar. It is more than five meters long and more than two meters wide.

The distinctive styling is also to be retained for the production model, which is currently being developed in research and development centers in Germany and China.

Although Apollo does not have to disclose any technical details yet, it is developing a new 800 V silicon carbide (SiC) double inverter in cooperation with the Japanese electronics component manufacturer ROHM.

This inverter is to be coupled with two 800 V axial flux electric motors as part of a modular electric drive train, which will be presented in Shanghai as Crate Powertrain.

According to Ho King Fung, CEO of the Apollo Future Mobility Group, not only will it be used for future Apollo electric vehicles, but it will also be offered to third parties.

The EVision S is followed by the EVision X, a luxury electric SUV that can rival the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV previewed through a darkened image. Both electric cars are expected to go into production in China by the end of 2023.

Apollo’s main business is the provider of Engineering Services Outsourcing (ESO) for clients such as Audi, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Lamborghini and Volkswagen. It also manufactures the Intensa Emozione V12 hypercar in small series in Germany.
