A few hours before his wedding, a man was killed in a traffic accident.
Myles “Miley” Harty, 20, of Askeaton, Co. Limerick, died instantly when the car he was in the front passenger seat left the street at around 1am in Cragmore on Askeaton to Rathkeale Road and hit a post .
A teenager gardai believed to have driven the car was arrested by gardai at the scene on suspicion of violating the traffic law.
A third man, who was a passenger in the back of the car – a silver Skoda hatchback – was taken from the crime scene to Limerick University Hospital in an ambulance with injuries that Gardai said were “not life threatening.”
Mr. Harty was due to be married that Saturday afternoon at St. Munchin’s Church in Limerick City.
His heartbroken fiancée was comforted by family and friends. The broader traveler community of which Mr. Harty belonged was plunged into deep sadness, and his broad circle of friends and relatives tried to cope with his sudden death.
Fr Seán Ó’Longaigh, Rev. Askeaton, said Mr. Harty was well known in his rural community in western Limerick.
Father Ó’Longaigh said the city was “in shock”.
“It is very sad for the families that they are now switching from a wedding to a funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are, of course, with the family. “
“Myles was a young person who grew up locally, he went to the local school, he had a lot of connections in Askeaton. He was supposed to get married in Limerick today, yes, the family must be split up. “
Gardai is investigating the circumstances of the fatal collision with a single vehicle and has requested witnesses and all dashcam footage from other vehicles that were en route R518 Askeaton to Rathkeale at the time of the collision.
A spokesman said: “Gardaí investigating a fatal collision with a single vehicle that occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on August 21, 2021 on the R518 Askeaton to Rathkeale Road, Co. “The driver of the vehicle (late teens) was arrested at the scene and taken to Henry Street Garda Station, where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act of 1984.”
“The street is currently closed and forensic collision investigators are conducting a technical investigation into the crime scene. Local diversions are set up. “
Looking for witnesses, the spokesman said: “Gardaí also appeals to all road users who were on the R518 in Cragmore Askeaton at the time and who may have camera recordings (including a dash cam) to make these recordings available to Gardaí. “
