ARG could make an offer for supercars

ARG is believed to have renewed interest in owning supercars

The Australian Racing Group appears to be joining the growing list of parties interested in buying Archer Capital’s majority stake in Supercars.

Founded three years ago, ARG has quickly built a strong portfolio of Australian motorsport categories.

The most important of these are the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series and the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship.

Other ARG-owned series include GT World Challenge Australia, Touring Car Masters and National Trans Am, while the group also owns events like Bathurst 6 Hour and Bathurst International.

Steps could now be taken to add Australia’s number one category to that mix.

ARG is 47.5 percent owned by Motorsport Events Pty Ltd, which is owned by Garry Rogers Motorsport Director Barry Rogers.

ARG has not confirmed its offering plans as Rogers declines to comment on the prospect when approached by Speedcafe.com.

However, ARG is known to have previously struggled to own supercars and just last month the company’s CEO Matt Braid said, “ARG has always been open to finding opportunities for different categories and motorsport opportunities in Australia” without going specifically refer to supercars.

Speedcafe.com last week revealed the identities of two key parties looking to buy supercars.

One of them is a partnership between supercars legend Mark Skaife and TLA Worldwide / TGI Sport.

The other is a five-person consortium made up of Paul Morris, Peter Adderton, Pete Smith, Mick Doohan, and Alan Gow.

Given his reputation at TCR Australia and the like, ARG could well assert its position on the basis of motorsport-specific experience in category management, although Gow owes this to him as he led the British Touring Car Championship for decades.

It’s not yet clear how quickly Archer could sell its 65 percent stake.
