Cairo: An Egyptian bride and groom died after a car taking them to their wedding reception turned and spilled into a street canal north of Cairo, local media reported on Friday.

The bride’s sister, who was in the same car, also died in the accident that occurred on Thursday evening in the Sharqia Delta Governorate.

According to one report, rescuers later retrieved the bodies of the bride and her sister while they continued to search for the groom’s body.

The police investigation revealed that the accident occurred during the couple’s wedding procession. The cause of the mishap is not yet clear.

Wedding parades in Egypt are traditionally characterized by a convoy of honking and brightly decorated cars that carry relatives of the bride and groom to the wedding celebration.
