Disney+ cars spinoff series, Cars on the Road, gets a new trailer revealing that Mater and Lightning McQueen will be back on the road together. The first film in the Cars franchise premiered in 2006, with Mater’s and McQueen’s long-lasting friendship born out of McQueen getting stuck in Mater’s hometown of Radiator Springs. Since then, the pair have gone on several other adventures depicted in 2011’s Cars 2 and 2013’s Cars 3. The Cars franchise added the 2013 spinoff, Planes, to its arsenal and has grossed over $1.7 billion.

Owen Wilson will reprise his role as McQueen along with Larry the Cable Guy returning to voice Mater in the upcoming Disney+ spinoff series. Cars on the Road features nine episodes written by Steve Purcell, the writer for Disney’s Brave, and is produced by Pixar. Purcell also directs episodes in the series along with Bobby Podesta, the directing animator for Cars, and Brian Fee, the director for Cars 3.
Disney+ reveals a new trailer for Cars on the Road that shows Mater and McQueen going on a cross country road trip to attend Mater’s sister’s wedding. Mater says in the trailer, “All the bumps along the road, that’s what makes life worth living.” The trailer teases that Mater and McQueen are sure to encounter some bumps along the road including a carnival with flying and flipping cars, a Mad Max-esque arena, and even a haunted mansion full of ghost cars. Aside from these dangers, the two will also make some new friends along the way, and spend some quality time having fun at pit stops such as the Cartaceous Garden, which features a tire maze. Cars on the Road offers the chance to see Mater and McQueen deepen their friendship with yet another adventure. The series also harkens back to the roots of the franchise, with an emphasis being placed on the importance of everything that happens in between races as opposed to the races themselves. Who will voice the role of Mater’s sister as well as who may be guests on the series in the form of various cars on the road trip is being kept under wraps. Hopefully the series will continue the trend in the Cars movies of drawing several A-list actors into its supporting cast such as Tony Shalhoub, Paul Newman, Michael Keaton, and Michael Caine to name a few who appeared in the films.
The series seems to center a lighter tone than featured in the most recent film in the franchise, Cars 3, but this is not to say that Mater and McQueen won’t face another set of obstacles. Rather, the series offers a chance to not only focus more on Mater’s character due to the impetus of the road trip coming from Mater needing to get to his sister’s wedding, but also focus on a different type of challenge that accompanies driving across unknown terrain as opposed to professional race car driving. Viewers will have to continue following casting updates and other news relating to Cars on the Road ahead of its September 8 premiere date on Disney+.
