Chorley homeworker celebrates wedding anniversary with elderly residents

Last Saturday, May 8th, Sarah Hunter, the Finney House Nursing Home Activities Coordinator, finally tied the knot with her fiancé, Dave Thomas, who drives a truck.

The turmoil of the Covid-19 pandemic had canceled their plans for their special day several times, but the residents of the nursing home had counted down the days until the big day.

And after signing the documents in the Rose Suite at Preston Registry Office, she had arranged a short visit to the nursing home to show the residents her white dress.

Planning to cause a stir, she arrived in her one-of-a-kind version of a wedding car – a giant Peterbilt-hooded truck tractor.

Little did she know that her two co-workers, Jen Stutter and Lisa Kimble, had prepared a surprise that turned the foyer into a pop-up wedding party venue, complete with decorations, afternoon tea, sugared almonds, wedding favors, Dollars’ Fizz and a wedding cake.

And residents eager to join in had spent time creating their own intrigues by hand to wear to the surprise celebrations, with one resident even being moved to tears when she saw Sarah, who was going through the entire Covid-19 -Pandemic helped take care of her.

Sarah said, “We were both shocked and amazed. I couldn’t believe how hard everyone had tried.

“One of our residents cried tears of joy when she saw me. I would have loved to have them all with me at my wedding ceremony, but that was really the next best thing. It really helped make this day a magical day to remember like to remember.

“I worked here for years and developed close relationships with them during Covid. It took me so long to plan this wedding and when I booked it I told the residents who were looking forward to it and just wanted to see me . ” in my dress.

“We built so many closer relationships that they were so happy they were canceled in February. It was absolutely amazing that I couldn’t thank them enough, they just thought I looked beautiful.

Sarah had been unable to invite residents due to current Covid-19 restrictions, preventing residents from leaving the security of their home and limiting the number of visitors who can attend weddings.

And they have turned craft materials into fascinators to wear

Weddings and civil partnerships with up to 15 people can take place in COVID-19-safe premises until next Monday, May 17th, then the number will be increased to 30.

Jen Stutter, one of Sarah’s colleagues at Chorley who helped organize the surprise, said, “Sarah is not just a colleague, she is a good friend and we wanted to make the day special for her.

“Their wedding was canceled a few times due to Covid and the residents showed great interest, counting the days and sharing their excitement. So we felt it appropriate to share the day with them while pampering Sarah.” . “
