Couple’s wedding nightmare as Thornton Manor ‘refuse £11k refund’ after fire

A couple’s wedding plans have turned into a nightmare as Thornton Manor reportedly refused to refund them £11,000 despite canceling the wedding.

The couple were set to tie the knot at Thornton Manor on April 2 – but following a devastating fire at the venue in Thornton Hough have decided to move to a new venue.

But the couple claimed Thornton Manor said it can’t afford to refund them for the wedding which cost around £11,000 – leaving the couple unsure on what to do.

Molly Foster and Jordan Goldie, from Bolton, have moved their wedding date four times after first looking to get married in 2019 before the pandemic.

Ms Foster, 32, said the couple has paid around £11,000 for the wedding at Thornton Manor – and guests booked every one of the 22 rooms as well as a number of cottages on the estate.

The couple claimed all guests have now been told Thornton Manor can’t refund any of them leaving them all out of pocket.

Ms Foster added she has contacted her insurance about the wedding – but the insurance company won’t pay out and instead have told the couple it’s the responsibility of Thornton Manor.

Thornton Manor told Ms Foster and Mr Goldie they have the opportunity to move the wedding from the manor to one of the marquees – but the couple have decided instead to move to another venue.

Ms Foster told the ECHO they want to keep the same wedding date as they’ve booked music and entertainment for that weekend.

But with just over a month to go before their wedding, Ms Foster and Mr Goldie are in limbo as they have to pay for one venue while waiting for the refund from another.

Ms Foster said: “We were offered a marquee but if we wanted that we could get one much cheaper.

“We actually found a new venue for the same day as we didn’t want to change the day again.

“Obviously that balance will need to be paid within the next couple of weeks.

“It’s meant to be one of the most special days of our life but it’s just becoming even more of a stress.

“Thornton Manor has told us they can’t afford to refund the money but what about us?

“We can afford to pay for another wedding venue, but why should we pay out again when Thornton Manor have taken our money for a service they haven’t been able to provide?”

Ms Foster claimed that since they were told their wedding wouldn’t be able to go ahead they have struggled to contact Thornton Manor and receive sufficient updates into their situation.

Ms Foster added she is in contact with a number of other couples who are also struggling for a response from the wedding venue.

The 32-year-old told the ECHO Thornton Manor regularly kept in contact with the couple when they were booking the venue.

But since the fire on February 5 that ripped through the wedding venue leaving extensive damage to the roof and walls Ms Foster claimed contact has been limited.

She said: “I’ve never experienced customer service like it.

“It’s not just us though – all my guests have said they haven’t been given a refund as well.

“I feel even worse for all the people who had a room for the wedding but will have to book something else.

“My partner sells cars – and I said to Thornton Manor if they bought a car but it didn’t come and then they were told it wasn’t coming and there’d be no refund, you’d think something was wrong.

“It’s been diabolical.”

Ms Foster said she’s now submitted a claim to the small claims court over the ongoing situation.

The ECHO contacted Thornton Manor in regard to the claims put forward by Ms Foster but received no response.
