Couples who couldn’t afford to have wedding photos developed see them for the first time on the 60th anniversary

A couple who couldn’t afford to have their wedding photos developed saw them for the first time on their 60th wedding anniversary.

Kathleen and Terence Robinson were close to getting married 60 years ago after spending £ 20 on a wedding dress and £ 4.10 on a three-tier wedding cake.

They borrowed friends’ cars to bring to the wedding as Kathleen was taken in a Ford Zephyr and Terence in a Morris Minor.

But there was nothing left to pay to have the wedding photos developed.

Sixty years later, her family had the negatives developed, and the happy Humberston couple saw them for the first time.

The couple had their wedding at St. James’ Church, Grimsby, now Grimsby Minster.

Friends and family gathered for a celebration at Cleethorpes Golf Club, where they were eventually presented with their wedding album.

Kathleen, 84, said, “We always kept the evidence. It was a surprise to receive the album after all these years and look at the photos.

Terence said, “We waited 60 years for this. It was too much to develop.

“We had nothing left after the wedding, even the wedding cars were borrowed from friends.

“I borrowed a car so we could go to Wales for our honeymoon. I did my military service there and we enjoyed walking around.”

They have two sons, Michael and David, and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Terence worked for Bellamy’s Jaguar dealership and later joined Rick Godwin to start her own Jaguar renovation company, Robinson and Godwin, on Holme Street and King Edward Street.

Kathleen and Terence were delighted with a telegram from the Queen.

It said, “I am glad to hear that you are celebrating your Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

“I congratulate you on this special occasion.”

Kathleen, who worked as a cleaner at NatWest Bank in Cleethorpes for 28 years, said she and Terence lived in the family home on Lidgard Road in Humberston for 60 years.

“The mortgage was £ 13 a month and he was making £ 13 a month and I was making £ 5. We never had much left. Children these days don’t know they were born, ”said Kathleen.

We grew up in war. But we could always go out and play whenever and wherever we wanted. I feel with kids now that they can’t, “she added.
