Covid Scotland: Change in wedding and funeral rules from next week confirms Nicola Sturgeon

At today’s Covid briefing, Nicola Sturgeon announced a change in the rules for weddings and funerals.

As announced last week (June 15th), the Scottish Government will adhere to the current restrictions in any part of Scotland for the next three weeks, which means the lockdown levels will not change.

Although Glasgow remains in Level 2, there are hopes that the city can leave on July 28th.

Last week, the First Minister said Scotland will likely choose to end the restrictions from Jan.

The changes proposed today for weddings and funerals will go into effect Monday, June 28 – just six days away.

In a speech to parliament today, Nicola Sturgeon said the high number of new registered Covid cases was a “significant consideration”.

“To use the racial analogy, we must not allow the virus to be too far ahead of vaccines.”

Weddings

From June 28, wedding service providers and other employees of the married couple will no longer count towards the upper limit for a wedding.

And according to these new rules, those who accompany the wedding couple through the aisle no longer have to wear face covering.

As a welcome step, live entertainment will now be possible at receptions – although people will still have to sit at tables.

Funerals

As for funerals, the guidelines will also change next week, meaning people from more than one household can help carry a coffin and use string to lower them.

Ms. Sturgeon said, “We expect these changes to have relatively little impact on the carryover – they are relatively minor changes.

“I hope they will make a difference to those who organize and attend weddings and funerals before the major changes at Level 0.”

Following the revelation of the new rules, Sturgeon said they will assume “based on the most recent case numbers” that the current values will remain in effect across Scotland until July 19.
