An anonymous father drove to Reddit earlier this month to see if he was wrong to spend the wedding fund he had saved for his daughter on gifts for himself.
The man posted his situation on a popular subreddit that allows users to vote on who the bad apple is in a civil battle, and it turns out the father spent around $ 35,000 on a new car and vacation.
WHO PAYS FOR WHAT IN A WEDDING?
On the forum, the father stated that his daughter had postponed their wedding for more than a year and recently ran away.
“After she told me the news, I was thrilled to be able to use it for other purposes,” explained the father. “My car has had some problems lately so I’ve decided to self-medicate and get a new car in cash at the wedding fund. I’ve paid roughly [$30,000] and with the rest of the money, my wife and I decided to go on our own little getaway. I didn’t find that controversial. “

A few weeks after the daughter ran away, the father said she asked if she could use the wedding fund he had saved for a down payment. News of what became of the wedding fund reportedly angered the daughter and prompted the husband’s ex-wife to refer to him as “selfish”.
WEDDING GIFT EXPENDITURE: HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? HOW MUCH IS NOT ENOUGH?
“I never told her it was a wedding or whatever she wanted, so I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong,” defended the father, but wondered if his opinion was biased and asked, whether other Reddit users could share their perspectives.
When Redditors asked for more details, the father updated his post to clarify a few key points that helped him decide it was okay to self-medicate
“I’m a worker. She knew I had put money aside for her wedding,” said the father. “I never told her it was a fund she could use for anything. I paid for her college and planned to pay for her wedding, but beyond that, I had no intention of paying her way through life . “

The dad’s Reddit post generated nearly 1,000 comments, and most of the time Redditors were on his side.
“OP (original poster) paid all of his daughter’s college tuition and living expenses to help her start her life without college debt,” wrote the post’s top commentator. “Isn’t that enough gift?”

Another top commenter said they understood the daughter’s disappointment, but admitted that the daughter shouldn’t have assumed the money would still be hers after the eloping, especially since there had been no discussion with the father beforehand.
“”[Your] Daughter can be disappointed, but not an ungrateful, legitimate brat, “wrote the commentator.” Especially since you paid for all of your schooling. “
