Electric cars are cheaper to run than petrol and diesel

According to calculations by Leaseplan, a battery car in Germany is cheaper to maintain than a diesel or gasoline engine. In the upper middle class, the electric car from the car leasing company is 200 euros cheaper than a diesel and 118 euros than a gasoline engine at 760 euros a month.

A plug-in hybrid with a total of 851 euros in maintenance costs is also less than the diesel and thus comparable to the gasoline engine, but almost 100 euros more expensive than a pure electric car, writes Leaseplan. A small electric car costs 570 euros a month, a diesel in this category 618 euros and a petrol engine 589 euros. In the compact class, the electric version comes to 618 euros, the diesel to 735 euros and the gasoline engine to 715 euros.

In the past year, the maintenance costs for an electric car in Germany were only slightly higher than that for diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles. At that time, an electric car in the small and compact class was 10 euros a month more expensive than a diesel and 26 euros more expensive than a gasoline engine in these classes. In the mid-range segment, the cost of electric cars was fully competitive compared to vehicles with internal combustion engines in 14 countries, including Germany.

For its annual Car Cost Index (PDF), Leaseplan looks at the maintenance costs for the three types of drive in 22 European countries. All costs are averaged over the first four years and an annual mileage of 30,000 km is estimated. Only in Greece is the maintenance of an electric car in the premium middle class cheaper than in Germany at 746 euros, while in the Czech Republic it costs 1,222 euros a month. The cost of a petrol engine is also cheapest in Greece at 772 euros a month and the most expensive in Portugal at 1,445 euros, as is the maintenance of a diesel, which costs 1,541 euros a month in Portugal. In Hungary, diesel maintenance is cheapest at 802 euros.

In relation to gross domestic product, the total cost of ownership for driving is highest in Switzerland and Portugal and lowest for drivers in Denmark and Germany. Upper mid-range electric cars are compared to internal combustion engine vehicles in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States fully competitive kingdom. Electric vehicles that are no more than 5 percent more expensive than their counterparts with a combustion engine are considered competitive for Leaseplan.
