F2 champion Piastri is passionate about Supercars laps

The newly crowned Formula 2 champion drove very few races in his native Australia; his focus shifted to Europe during his karting days.

In fact, he has not contested any car races on home soil at home, having made his Formula 4 debut long after moving abroad.

Should his impeccable junior category earn a Formula 1 place in 2023 as planned, his local debut is likely to take place in Albert Park at the Australian Grand Prix.

In the longer term, however, Piastri would like to get to know the core of Australian motorsport – the V8-powered supercars – better.

He says his interest in driving a supercar was piqued during a day of testing he was with his friend and local Carrera Cup driver Christian Pancione.

“I would love to try one,” he said. “I don’t know how to drive one because they look like a handful!

“Racing in Bathurst would always be cool. But yeah, I would love to try because they look like a little car that you are trying to tame.

“One of my friends in Australia drives races in the Porsche Carrera Cup in Australia. I went there on one of his testing days and there were a lot of supercars there too, it was cool to see them drive around.

“It would be cool to try in the future.”

Pushing for his reference to the Bathurst race, Piastri said that if he ever did race it would be at the Bathurst 1000 and after his single-seater career ended.

“All F1 drivers want to race in Monaco I think and all V8 supercar drivers want to race in Bathurst,” he said.

“It’s definitely the main road I want to go.”

Piastri will return to Melbourne tomorrow for the off-season before heading back to Europe in the New Year to take on his new role as Alpine reserve and test rider.
