Heads of the Foreign Office are buying gas-guzzling cars and calling on the British to drive electrically

The FOREIGN office bosses are still buying gasoline-guzzling polluting cars – while giving lectures to the British on how to drive electric to save the planet.

A whopping four out of ten of the plush new Jaguar Land Rovers that our diplomats have bought in the past two years are still running at least partially on diesel or gasoline, The Sun can reveal.

It comes despite a vow by No10 to ban the sale of gasoline-guzzling engines altogether by 2030.

The embarrassing numbers unearthed by Labor will cause some red faces when Boris Johnson kicks off his Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow.

Labor Shadow Secretary of State Catherine West said: “The Cop26 is our chance to set an example to the world of progress towards Net Zero and to showcase the amazing new electric cars that are being built in the UK to help us do this to achieve this goal.

“But instead we have another example of the government making one rule for everyone else and another for itself.”

A total of 44 of the 53 new Jaguar Land Rovers that have been bought for the Federal Foreign Office since January 2020 have gasoline, diesel or hybrid drives – which still consume gas.

In July of this year, the government had already promised to make its entire fleet of cars fully electric by the end of 2027.

The government spent over £ 2 million on the cars – an average of £ 42,000 for each.

A Federal Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are committed to reducing the ministry’s environmental impact and aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier.

“The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is converting its overseas fleet of vehicles to low-emission vehicles, but we have to work with the infrastructure of the countries in which we operate.”
