Royal Wedding: Experts discuss Harry’s comment on William

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William mark their 11th wedding anniversary today. The couple got married in a lavish wedding at Westminster Abbey following a 10 year courtship. It has gone down as one of the most memorable moments in modern royal history.

The Abbey was a carefully chosen venue for the royal nuptials, being the setting for every coronation since 1066.

It has seen sixteen royal weddings, including the Queen’s and Princess Margaret’s, as well as the nuptials of two of the monarch’s children — Princess Anne and Prince Andrew.

Margaret made history when she married Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960 as the first royal bride to have her wedding televised, with over 20 million Brits tuning in to watch the Queen’s younger sister say “I do”.

The following generations of royals have followed in the princess’ footsteps and royal fans across the world have been able to watch the weddings of members of the Royal Family, including: Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex; Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

An audience of 27 million watched the BBC coverage of Kate and William’s 2011 Royal Wedding, including the bride and groom themselves.

Katie Nicholl, author of ‘The Making of A Royal Romance’, recounted a story of the Duke and Duchess watching the coverage of their wedding following the ceremony.

Speaking on Vanity Fair’s royal podcast, Dynasty, she said: “And I remember Kate’s hairdresser, James Price, telling me that when he went to Clarence House to give Kate her updo for the evening… they were sitting on the bed — Harry, William and Kate — in their dressing gowns, Kate still in her tiara, watching the playback of the BBC’s coverage of the Royal Wedding.”

Prince Harry played an important role as William’s best man on the day, and the Duke of Cambridge returned the favor seven years later as he took on the same role in the wedding of his younger brother and Meghan Markle.

According to royal author Marcia Moody, Harry took on the responsibilities of a best man and calmed his brother while at the altar waiting for his bride-to-be.

In her 2013 book, ‘Kate: A Biography’, Ms Moody wrote: “Harry looked back as Kate started walking down the aisle and reported back to his brother, ‘Right, she is here now.’

The royal best man then said: “’Well, she looks beautiful, I can tell you that.’”

Harry reportedly later made Kate cry during his best man speech in front of the newlyweds and their 300 guests at the reception in Buckingham Palace.

In her book, Harry: Life, Loss, and Love, Ms Nicholl claimed details of Harry’s special tribute to William and Kate, writing: “It was affectionate, warm and funny and touched William deeply.

“When he said the couple’s decade-long romance was his inspiration, there was a shy smile from Chelsy [Davy]while Kate shed a tear.”

Harry later found love with former Hollywood actress, Meghan Markle, whom he got married to in 2018.

The pair began married life as working members of the Royal Family, but left the Firm in a shock exit two years later.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved across the pond and now reside in Montecito, California with their two children — Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana.

Meghan and Harry had not returned to the UK together until their surprise visit earlier this month; they stopped off in Windsor before heading to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games.

During their brief visit, the couple met with Charles and Camilla, and later the Queen.

However, the Duke and Duchess were not reunited with the other half of the so-called “Fab Four” as Kate and William were on a family ski trip in France at the time.

The princes are understood to have not seen each other since July last year, when they came together to unveil a statue in tribute to their late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Their relationship was said to be particularly strained by the Sussexes’ exit and subsequent tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, during which Harry said that his father and brother were “trapped” in the Firm.

Speculation of a rift was further exacerbated by Harry’s recent swerve of a question about Charles and William.

In an interview with NBC’s Today show Hoda Kotb, the Duke of Sussex was asked whether he missed his brother and father.

Harry stopped short of answering the question directly, and instead said he was focused on competitors at the Invictus Games.

He said: He said: “Look, I mean… at the moment, I’m here focused on these guys and these families and giving everything I can, 120 percent, to them to make sure that they have the experience of a lifetime.

“That’s my focus here. And when I leave here, I go back, and my focus is my family, who I miss massively.”

The next time Harry may return to the UK is for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June; he and Meghan have reportedly been invited to join the Royal Family in the celebrations which could include appearing on Buckingham Palace during the Trooping the Color parade, or attending the Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

While Harry has said he does not know whether he will return, or if his family will be in tow, it would provide the perfect opportunity for the Royal Family to meet his youngest child, Lilibet, and for he and his brother to finally reunite.
