Letter to the editor: electric cars are not a quick fix for climate change

There are a few things to consider when thinking about electric cars to save our planet from climate change:

First, will there be resistance similar to face masks and vaccinations?

Second, and more importantly, where is the electrical energy going to come from to power these millions and millions of vehicles? From looking at the news it seems obvious that we are struggling to provide enough electricity to meet current needs, but electric car enthusiasts seem to dream that we can easily meet this huge need by harnessing wind and solar power. Check out Michael Moore’s Planet of the Humans and you’ll get a more realistic assessment of the limits of wind and sun. Does that mean that we will be forced to accept the widespread construction of nuclear power plants in order to keep our heads on the real problem in the sand?

As I have emphasized in the past, climate change is as real as waste disposal; dwindling water supplies; declining fish populations; diminishing mineral reserves, etc. These are all symptoms that our limited planet is struggling with the approximately 7 billion people who inhabit it. Unfortunately, according to the upper range of UN population projections, the 7 billion will be 14 billion in just 40 years and 20 billion in 80 years.

Just addressing the symptoms while ignoring the main cause (overpopulation) will be a pointless exercise. Acting this way would be like deflating your boat with a dehumidifier while ignoring the 3 foot hole in the hull!
