Oh cute! This is the best budget wedding car on social media – what was yours?

Wedding cars are as big a deal as the actual marriage on the big day. And, according to a study, tiny cars are now ranked the best ones in the world for couples looking to save a buck – and they make pretty cool props too.

These days, fancy stretched limousines and vintage cars are seemingly for matric balls. Instead, more affordable and less ostentatious vehicles are becoming increasingly popular for weddings.

According to researchers at Stress Free Car Rentalrising wedding costs, the global pandemic and increased cost of living have all been factors in a trend away from expensive wedding cars towards more affordable and distinctly quirky vehicle choices.

The researchers have trawled the internet and scoured through 1000 posts for the most popular #WeddingCar hashtag. Small compact cars and quirky retro camper vans now make up the majority of Instagram’s top posts, and found the following vehicles to be the most sought-after:

1.Fiat 500
2.VW Beetle
3. Mini
4.VW camper van
5. Citroën 2CV
6. Renault 4
7. Smart car

Cute and quirky

the Stress Free Car Rental researcher says: “When it comes to choosing a wedding car, it has always been traditional for couples to hire large impressive vehicles to turn up at the venue in style and wow their guests.

“There’s now a growing trend for couples to choose less flashy cars, and instead, they’re opting for cute and quirky vehicles as well as things like camper vans that can add a really unique touch to a wedding and make it memorable for all the guests.

“The Fiat 500 is top of the pack for an affordable choice that also makes an adorable prop for wedding photos.”

I had a pretty non-traditional wedding for someone who was born and raised in a Methodist Church. For one, I had a black wedding dress and was six months pregnant at the time. There was no sit-down reception; it was a finger-food buffet style do straight after the nuptials in our church hall right next door. But, I made sure we had the wedding cars I wanted, a pair of Nissan Skyline R33s.

There were supposed to be a pair of Toyota Supra Mk4’s too, which was to drive in convoy behind the Nissans, but that didn’t quite work out as planned. The cars even featured on the wedding pamphlets we had designed ourselves and paired with our torque-mountain wedding cake (think Tokyo Drift). The cars made our day special, and it’s still the highlight of our nuptials almost eight years ago.
