Plans for new A127 electric charging station presented

DRIVERS can charge their electric cars in less than half an hour while sipping a fresh cup of coffee in an “airport lounge” as part of the big new plans in South Essex.

Proposals were made for a huge e-charging forecourt north of the A127 near Nevendon Road in Wickford, where 36 e-charging stations will be installed.

The plans, well supported by the council presidents, will include an airport-style lounge in addition to high-speed internet and cafes.

Hopefully the drivers will use the courtyard courtesy of Gridserve as a pit stop on their drive through South Essex.

Craig Rimmer, Chairman of the Recreation and Environment Committee, said, “This is something we should wholeheartedly welcome to Basildon.

“The A127 is the ideal place for something like this, with the problems we had with the air quality along the road.

“We want a combination of larger electrical locations like this one and developers who are bringing several into their plans.”

The parking spaces offer charging times between 20 and 30 minutes, which will accelerate further in the future.

Drivers can reserve charging slots.

Michelle Tuddenham, 40, who lives near the Wick, added, “I’m behind something that’s being built here and I think that’s the only place it could go.

“We don’t want to land it in the green belt.

“I thought about buying an electric car, but my budget doesn’t allow it.

“I’m all for it, it’s the way things are.”

Basildon is notorious for poor air quality, especially along and around the A127.

The government threatened to create a clean air zone that would have put drivers under stress.

To counteract the poor air quality, it is planned to straighten the former “Fortune of War” roundabout on the expressway.
