Sales of electric cars and plug-in hybrids are increasing across Europe

New car registrations across Europe fell dramatically in July, but sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids continue to grow.

Data from JATO Dynamics shows that 967,830 new cars were registered in 26 European markets in July. That was a decrease of 24 percent from the 1.27 million registered units in July last year. Nevertheless, sales since the beginning of the year have remained positive with a total of 7,381,735 registrations, 17 percent more than in the same period in 2020.

The market share of gasoline cars across Europe continues to decline. In July 2019, gas-powered ICE vehicles made up 63.4 percent of the brand. By July 2020 it was 59.8 percent and in July 2021 it was 59.0 percent. Diesel registrations also fell by 166,000 units between July 2020 and July 2021 and by almost 207,000 units between July 2019 and July 2021. New registrations of electric vehicles increased by 49,000 between July 2020 and July 2021 and by 125,000 between July 2019 and July 2021.

The best-selling new car in Europe in July 2021 was the Dacia Sandero with 20,446 sales, closely followed by the Volkswagen Golf (19,425 units), Toyota Yaris (18,858 units), VW Polo (17,343 units) and the VW T-Roc (16,496 units). The best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle, meanwhile, was the Ford Kuga with 4,247 registrations, ahead of the Peugeot 3008 (3,039 units) and the Volvo XC40 (2,931 units).

In the purely electric vehicle category, the VW ID.3 was ahead with 5,433 registrations, clearly ahead of the Renault Zoe with 3,976 sales, the Kia Niro (3,953) and the Skoda Enyaq iV (3,649).

“Consumers continue to respond positively to the EV offerings and incentives that have made these vehicles far more competitive in terms of their prices,” said Felipe Munoz, global analyst for JATO Dynamics, in a statement. “We are starting to see the impact of campaigns favoring EVs over ICE vehicles in the market, but the industry is not doing enough yet to enable EVs to absorb the losses from traditional powertrains.”
