Saudi Arabia Prepares for Electric Car Delivery; SASO issues first accreditation certificate

Saudi Gazette report

RIAD – The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) announced that it has issued a Saudi model accreditation certificate to one of the electric car manufacturers.

SASO had received several requests from manufacturers of electric vehicles for the accreditation certificate for electric vehicles, which complies with the technical regulations for electric vehicles.

The SASO sources said they are continuing their work on introducing the technical requirements for attestation of conformity (CoC) for electric vehicles, chargers and their accessories. It urged all car dealers and manufacturers to adhere to the Saudi model of accreditation certificate.

SASO said it has given permission to commercially import electric vehicles and their chargers, provided that the Saudi model accreditation certificate is issued to the target models before the import process begins.

“It is responsible for issuing the sample certificate of accreditation and studying the documents proving the safety of vehicles, in accordance with the electric vehicle technical regulations issued by the organization, which clarify the requirements for vehicles and chargers to ensure safety to ensure and ensure that they are tested according to the specifications established in accordance with the climatic conditions of the kingdom and to provide the best performance for the users of electric vehicles and chargers in the kingdom.

“SASO noted that EV charging licenses and EV maintenance consumer rights are the responsibility of a number of concerned agencies that are outside the organization’s technical responsibilities.”

It is noteworthy that the existing operating system, which involves government agencies as well as private specialists in the Kingdom, continues to study various aspects in order to prepare the infrastructure for the inclusion of this type of car in its markets.

This is done by the Infrastructure Committee for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations under the direction of the Ministry of Energy.

Committee members included representatives from government and private agencies and research centers such as the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Local, Rural and Housing Affairs, the Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority, SASO, the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center, the Saudi Electricity Company and the King Abdullah Center for Petroleum Studies and Research.

In June 2020, SASO organized a virtual workshop entitled “The Electric Vehicle Infrastructure in the Kingdom”, which was attended by numerous manufacturers of electric vehicles and chargers.

The workshop was held in coordination with the Department of Energy, the Department of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, the Regulatory Authority for Electricity and Combined Heat and Power, and the Saudi Electricity Company.

The workshop focused on presenting the details of the legislation and specifications for electric car chargers to consider before importing this type of car or its chargers.

SASO is the competent authority responsible for all matters relating to standardization, metrology and quality in the UK.

It provides the necessary measures for quality control of raw materials and products and defines the necessary conformity procedures for products based on the review of quality, legislation and the application of the quality mark system.

It regulates the organizational and executive tasks related to standards, measurement technology and quality, including the definition of Saudi standards for goods, products and services, the measurement and the definition of procedures for conformity assessment and certification.
