Shift paddles for supercars now unlikely

The category has been exploring a move to paddles from traditional sequential stick shifting as part of their next generation cars, which will have electronically assisted shifting.

The plan was to test both gear stick and paddle shifters on the two prototypes, with the Mustang being built with a gear stick and the Camaro with paddle shifters.

However, Motorsport.com sources have indicated that the likelihood of paddles being used in the racing cars is decreasing as the category prepares to change hands in relation to owner.

It appears that TGI Sport / TLA / ARG, which will buy Supercars from Archer Capital, is in favor of keeping a stick-operated shift.

If so, it will be a popular move for both fans and riders as support for paddles has been rare in recent months.

Just last week, three-time Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin urged the category to listen to their fans and drop the paddle idea.

Drivers, meanwhile, were concerned that paddles would make the cars easier to drive and reduce the impact of the hectic visibility on board.

The latter problem is also influenced by plans to remove other controls in the car, such as the stabilizer setting.

Supercars announced earlier this week that plans to roll out Gen3 mid-next season have been scrapped, with the new cars slated to start on the first lap in 2023.

The prototypes will be unveiled in Bathurst this December and will be seen on most of the laps as they develop over the next year.
