Electric vehicles in India have seen increasing interest recently. But as the adoption of electric vehicles has increased, this has led the Delhi government to withdraw its subsidies for electric cars instead.

Subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles are one of the main features of Delhi EV policy. According to Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, the government does not plan to further expand the subsidy system for the purchase of electric vehicles.

The electric vehicle policy of the Indian state of Delhi, which began early last year, subsidized the first 1,000 electric cars bought in the capital – on a first-come-first-served basis.

“The electric car segment received the necessary boost in Delhi. Our focus now is on opening up the two-wheeler, freight and public transportation segments of electric vehicles (EVs) as they make up a large portion of the 10 million+ registered vehicles in Delhi. In addition, they travel more than private cars and thus cause more environmental pollution. “

Approximately 73% of the 10 million registered vehicles in Delhi are two-wheelers.

On October 28, the government of Delhi plans to only purchase electric buses in the future, with the aim of increasing the proportion of emission-free vehicles in public transport to over 50%.

The government will add at least 2,300 electric buses to its fleet by the end of 2022 and upgrade all existing bus depots with charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, reports The Hindustan times.

According to reports, traffic officials said there is less demand for electric cars or four-wheelers compared to other EV segments due to a lack of options in the auto market.

“There are very few e-car variants that are affordable. From next year things could go uphill as automakers Tata and Hyundai plan to introduce electric hatchbacks, ”said a senior transportation official on condition of anonymity.

There are very few variants of electric cars on the market right now, and most of them cost over ₹ 15 lakh.

Tata Nexon EV ranges from 13.99 lakh to ₹ 16.85 lakh, Mahindra E-Verito costs between 12.67-13.03 lakh, Hyundai Kona Electric ranges from ₹ 23.71-23.91 lakh, MG ZS EV is between ₹ 20.99-24.68 lakh and Mercedes Benz EQC costs around ₹ 1.06 crore.
