Shane van Gisbergen
Shane van Gisbergen is the most popular supercar driver, according to data from Kincrome’s 2021 Motorsport Survey by Speedcafe.com.
More than 13,000 people took part in the comprehensive survey on various topics of local and international motorsport last year.
While a fifth of the voters (20.06 percent) declared that they did not support a certain driver, van Gisbergen recorded a comfortable lead over his competitors with 16.52 percent.
And this despite the fact that the rival Shell V-Power Racing Team, whose drivers are Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison, are considered the most popular team in the championship – more than five percent ahead of van Gisbergen’s Red Bull Ampol Racing.
The Kiwi ace enjoyed the most dominant season of his career in 2021, winning 14 of 30 races and securing the title with one lap to go.
Van Gisbergen had ranked third behind runaway winners Scott McLaughlin and David Reynolds in the 2020 edition of the poll.
His next challenger in the 2021 poll, which asked fans to nominate their favorite supercar driver, was Chaz Mostert (10.68 percent).
Mostert led the lead for Walkinshaw Andretti United in a campaign that was crowned by his second Bathurst 1000 victory.
Not far behind were De Pasquale (8.57 percent), the now retired seven-time champion Jamie Whincup (8.38 percent), Cameron Waters (7.57 percent), Reynolds (7.10 percent) and Will Davison (5.05) Percent).
Mark Winterbottom, Will Brown and Todd Hazelwood completed the top 10 without the “Other” option.
