Swansea Riots: Chaos as Vigil Turns Violent, Cars Set On Fire, and Police Attack

Chaotic scenes erupted after a vigil exploded into all-out violence, during which cars were set on fire and hordes of people chanted and surrendered to the police.

A crowd was chanted and cheered on Thursday evening as a car was pushed down a steep hill into bollards while another vehicle was set on fire.

Photos showed two burning cars in the middle of the street, surrounded by smoke, while the crowds huddled around them.

In another video, people were seen throwing objects and yelling at the retreating police with protective shields.

An eyewitness alleged that around 200 people were present at the disruption, which started around 8 p.m., reports Wales Online.

Officials warned people to stay indoors amid the shocking scenes on the streets of Swansea’s Mayhill area Thursday night.

Images and footage posted on social media showed cars burning in the middle of the road and cheering crowds as a vehicle rolled down a hill.

Speaking to Wales Online, a father of two described the moment when wanton rioters broke through his windows and hurled bricks at him after they set his car on fire.

Uber Eats driver Adam Romain said there was “literally a riot” on the doorstep of his home in Mayhill, Swansea, Thursday night when his frightened family crouched inside.

Adam said, “I got a call from my friend saying that there is essentially a riot outside and cars are being burned. I understood that it was my car – everything was said very quickly.

“I shot back as quickly as possible – I was traveling with deliveries. I got back as fast as I could and drove right into it. About 100 guys throw bricks, burn cars. I stood here, put my motorcycle in the house, tried to protect it, and I stood here to protect my home, my family, my children, and my wife was hysterical, crying, and scared to death.

“You tried to set fire to this car. They took a bumper from another car that was thrown in there and then ran up the hill. As soon as they left, I went outside and tried to keep it from catching fire. “

Video footage of the crime scene appeared to show a mob attacking, kicking and throwing objects at a police car as it tried to leave the scene.

The crowd can be seen violently attacking the van as it slowly reverses.

Other videos showed officers in riot gear and shields being pelted with objects while people screaming, laughing and filming.

When a man picks up what looks like a stone or a brick, someone yells, “Get through!” before hurling it on the police car.

A large box is also thrown against the van windshield. As the van reverses, people can be heard screaming to encourage attacks on the van.

Tom Giffard, local member of the Welsh Parliament, called the scenes “disturbing”.

Welsh Secretary and MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Simon Hart, said: “A rough night for the police who deal with such reckless behavior.

“No excuses, the police have the right to react vigorously.”

South Wales Police Commissioner Tim Morgan said what began as a vigil for a recently deceased local resident escalated into “violence, criminal harm and willful disregard for public safety”.

He added: “We have a number of officers on site who are working to de-escalate the situation as quickly as possible and allow other ambulance workers to handle calls in the area.

“The incident is still ongoing and we ask everyone involved to leave the scene immediately.

“Those involved can count on robust measures. The post-incident investigation will also aim to identify all those affected.

“In the meantime, we urge residents to stay indoors while the matter is brought to a safe conclusion.”
