The bride thanks the Peterborough Pride protesters for cheering them on to the cathedral wedding

Peterborough’s Pride Parade took place on Saturday (August 21) and reached the city’s cathedral precincts when bride Cassandra Breed arrived for the wedding ceremony with her new husband Daniel.

The parade paused as their wedding car pulled up before cheering protesters greeted their arrival.

They formed an impromptu guard of honor, and Cassandra was applauded as she waved a small rainbow flag in recognition of the event.

She said, “It was amazing. The march was due a little later and we were a little late and when the car came around the corner we saw police cars and a lot of people.

“I worried for a moment … Then we realized it was the march and the people were great.

“A lady came running up and gave me a flower and I took a Pride flag.

“It really made a wonderful day. I was very proud to carry the flag with me to the altar.

“That meant we were 20 minutes late, but Daniel said afterwards that he wasn’t worried at all, although I think a member or two in the congregation might have started to worry.

“It was just fun to be involved in the event … I was also overjoyed to get married – literally, of course, because of the exhibition that is in the cathedral!”

The wedding car was driven by City Council Chairman Wayne Fitzgerald, who also owns a wedding car shop.

“I was wearing a different hat,” he said. “It was a great occasion. The parade cheered, clapped and cheered when we arrived and we were excited to be a part of it.

“I have since received a letter from one of the organizers in which we thanked us for joining the zeitgeist.”
