The
Coronavirus The pandemic and lockdown have led many couples to get creative with their wedding plans. After this COVID-19 forced Mitch Potashner and Kim Fishman To abandon their original wedding plans, the Ontario couple decided to take inspiration from something they got themselves into during the lockdown: Schitt’s Creek! With the creativity of their families and the help of Fab Fête Event Planning, they were able to embark on a lockdown-compliant micro-wedding the actual Rosebud Motel – or the Fishpot Motel, as they renamed it for the occasion!

“The idea for the Schitt’s Creek theme was literally conceived a week before the wedding when restrictions were tightened and we were only allowed to gather 10 people for an outdoor wedding ceremony. Drive-in and virtual ceremonies were also allowed.” explained the couple
HELLO! Canada by email.
They continued, “After setting the motel as the venue, we decided to have fun with the Schitt’s Creek theme.

“We felt that a creative, fun and unique wedding was exactly what we all needed in this time of life when people are hungry for feel-good experiences. We were delighted to have a long-awaited celebration in a meaningful place We love to be creative and wanted to surprise the guests with a traditional, but unexpected and unforgettable wedding. “

The Schitt’s Creek theme and the Rosebud Motel venue were also great choices for Mitch and Kim, as they got on the popular Canadian series at the start of COVID-19.
“We saw Schitt’s Creek early on during the pandemic and loved it from the start! We finished a few months ago,” said Kim and Mitch.

They explained, “The messages of life and love on the Schitt’s Creek show influenced us in many ways – the Rose family learned from giving up their extravagant lifestyle that you can still feel rich without money.”
The themes of the award-winning TV show caught the couple and they hope it continues to inspire.
“While many describe Schitt’s Creek as fun and unrealistic, we think the messages on this show are incredibly meaningful and timely – it’s about learning about yourself and others in unexpected and unprecedented times, and learning how to be in challenging times grows and develops, and about unconditional love, loss, change, adjustment, family values, family cohesion, small town values, compassion, diversity, honesty – essentially it’s about what’s really important in life.
“Our goal is to live our lives in a way that reflects the messages of the show.”
It sounds like the perfect addition to their wedding, but the Rose family didn’t consider that much in Mitch and Kim’s original wedding plans.
“Our original plans were more traditional: indoors in a beautiful location, 250 guests, band, bar, dance, etc.,” the couple revealed. “COVID has forced us to think outside the box and make lemonade out of the lemons thrown at us!”

Unfortunately, this wedding couldn’t take place due to coronavirus and social distancing measures. But the duo made the best of the situation. Fortunately, Kim’s father knows the owner of the Rosebud Motel, and he contacted him right after the April 16 announcement in Ontario that the wedding ceremony was limited to 10 people plus drive-in and livestream guests.
“He mentioned to the motel owner that it would be a dream for us to get married at the legendary Rosebud Motel,” said Kim. “So, each of us comes from the ‘get things done – let’s do it’ family. Everyone in both families has put their creative juices into full swing and implemented some great ideas in the few days we had to make everything happen. “
The couple used space at the Rosebud Motel in Mono, Ontario, about an hour and a half from downtown Toronto. The 70 foot sidewalk turned into the aisle and there were 20 parking spaces for drive-in patrons. They also had the Nottawasaga River as a beautiful backdrop.
The theme of Schitt’s Creek was also a hit with all the guests. “They loved it! A lot of our livestream guests said it was the best wedding they’ve ever attended,” said Mitch and Kim. “Some of our guests in the cars on site have decorated their cars and dressed up as characters from Schitt’s Creek.”

The newlyweds were also spoiled by a very special surprise
And Levy. The actor said in a video of the couple that he was “so honored” that Mitch and Kim tied the knot “in his second home”.

“The video is typical of Dan Levy – real, caring, kind and loving,” they explained. “And we loved his Redmond️ t-shirt because our family is rescuing dogs too!”
What what
Catherine O’Hara‘s character, Moira Rose, would say about the wedding, Mitch and Kim think, “Moira would have said,’ I’d be happy to answer as … pending. ‘”
Kim looks most like Alexis (Annie Murphy) “for her incredible optimism”, while Mitch “is most like David, [Dan Levy’s character] because he has such a big heart. “
For any couple who might be inspired by a Schitt’s Creek-themed wedding or celebration, Mitch and Kim offer this advice: “The wedding must reflect the couple’s personality and should be fun and memorable for guests.
“One piece of advice is not to make the subject overdue – make it a celebration for the couple who tie the knot and begin their official journey together.”
