The newlyweds’ parents and siblings die hours after the wedding

Nine people, including the parents and siblings of a newlywed groom, died in a car accident on Saturday on their return from the wedding.

The accident occurred at the toll booth along Glory Land Drive in the Igbogene axis of Yenagoa in the state of Bayelsa.

The deceased were returning to their base in the state’s Sagbama Township after the wedding ceremony when the unfortunate incident occurred, Daily Trust reports.

The bus the deceased passengers boarded collided with an oncoming vehicle returning from Warri, Delta state.

The vehicles were reportedly trying to divert onto the east-west road when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The cause of the accident could be related to the deplorable condition of this axis of the east-west road, said a witness.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials at the scene of the accident said they had rushed four people with injuries to a Yenagoa hospital, but one of whom later died.

He said the agency will issue an official statement at the end of the operation as the investigation is still ongoing.

Bayelsa police public relations officer Asinim Butswat said the squad had started investigating the incident.

He said: “The unfortunate accident happened on Saturday, December 4th, 2021 around 5:00 pm, along Glory Land Drive, Igbogene, where a Toyota Hiace bus with the reg. AKL 652 YP and a Toyota Forerunner Jeep with the reg. KMK 923 AA were involved.

“Sketches of the crime scene were made and the cars were evacuated to the Igbogene department for further investigation.

“The bodies of the victims were deposited in the teaching hospital of the Niger Delta University in Okolobrii, while the injured passengers are treated in the same facility.”
