The wedding beetle is still the wildest beetle

  • In honor of Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday, Volkswagen presented one of its most artistic creations.
  • The wedding beetle was originally built by Rafael Esparza-Prieto at the request of his boss before he was commissioned by VW to build a pair before the Olympics.
  • Esparza-Prieto built more than 20 of these bespoke Beetles.

In honor of Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday, Volkswagen has highlighted one of the most interesting examples of bespoke VWs from its archives. This bespoke creation, aptly referred to as the wedding beetle, is a body made to carry Cinderella to a ball. Or more realistic people who are away from their wedding.

Rafael Esparza-Prieto was asked by his boss to create a bespoke Beetle to attract customers to the parts warehouse where he worked. Esparza-Prieto was no stranger to metal shaping, as you can see by the quality of the decorative ironwork, which maintains the shape of a Volkswagen Beetle without the original bodywork. This Mexico City man’s creation was popular enough to contemplate Volkswagen ahead of the 1968 Olympics. Volkswagen commissioned Esparza-Prieto to build two more bicycles based on functioning chassis.

Best of all, there are actually multiple wedding beetles. Esparza-Prieto built more than 20 of these amazing creations.

We’re not sure what Leonardo da Vinci would think of this Volkswagen, mainly because he’d likely be confused by the magic of the combustion. We are sure he would appreciate Esparza-Prieto’s efforts.
