Vehicle-inspired engagement / wedding rings are a bespoke way to say “I love you … and my car”

A set of “Petrolhead Proposal” rings for enthusiasts who are also MINI Cooper lovers.

With couples tying the knot again as COVID-19 restrictions wear off, and with some looking to break with tradition on the way to the “new normal”, a UK-based company called Scrap Car Comparison has found an opportunity for avid admirers , her passion for her significant other with her own enthusiasm for automobiles, through tailor-made engagement and wedding rings that were designed as a tribute to a cherished car.

Regardless of the reflexive rolling of the eyes, this is a real undertaking. The company says it aims to “create a ring that really shows how much you love your partner – and their love for cars.” Our more pragmatic side would warn car-loving suitors not to double-check the final piece and tuck a more traditional diamond-studded ribbon in a pocket in case the party of the second part turned out to be expecting something far more traditional, let alone glitzy.

But hey – cars and romance have a rich and storied intertwined history, dating back to when most vehicles had front seats and voluminous backseat play areas. While there’s traditionally no way to get down on a bent knee, we suspect that many engagements are sealed with a kiss behind the wheel.

In addition, the car-flavored fingerware, developed in collaboration with engagement jeweler Edward Fleming, can be made with model-specific styling elements to commemorate a beloved vehicle that went to the junkyard, or a later owner, or one with who an enthusiast has long held an unrequited love.

For example, a ring made in homage to the original MINI Cooper uses red, white and blue stones and engravings of the Union Jack flag around the band, with a diamond setting based on the vehicle’s famous Minilight alloy wheel design. Can’t afford to give a Lamborghini to your future spouse? Put a ring on top of it instead, in this case with a central diamond attached to the vehicle’s signature tailpipe design, surrounded by hexagonal carbon fiber details, with the band highlighted by sharp-edged creases.

As with the cars themselves, the “Petrolhead Proposal” rings are offered with options, including a personalized license plate engraving on the inner band.

“Every day we meet customers who are discouraged and say goodbye to their car and leave the junkyard with the desire to take a piece with them,” says Dan Gick, Managing Director of Schrottwagenvergleich. It may not be for everyone, but cars are a huge part of some people’s lives and even their relationships. We are therefore pleased to offer the new service and to make some happy moments even happier! ”

The bike-inspired rings are limited until November 5th. All are individually created and make hearts beat faster. There are no specific prices, but depending on the design and materials used, we expect costs similar to those of a car.
