Netherlands become world market leader in electric cars: study

According to a study by the consulting and engineering company Arcadis, the Netherlands is now the world leader in trading electric vehicles. There are many different models of electric vehicles in the country and the market share of electric cars exceeds that of gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Electric cars are relatively cheap in the Netherlands, where there are currently 183 models for sale. The market share will grow to sixty cars per thousand inhabitants by 2025, says Arcadis. This country also has the most accessible EV charging infrastructure with great potential for further expansion into residential areas. The power grid can be used to capacity relatively quickly, but it is reliable, reports Arcadis.

Data from the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, China, California, and New York State were used for the study. Arcadis assumes that around 54 percent of all new car sales will be electric models by 2040.

An accelerated transition to electric vehicles, along with investments in clean energy and battery technology, is crucial to reduce emissions and limit global warming, said Arcadis Managing Director Peter Oosterveer.
