Acura NSX GT3 Evo22 is coming to continue supercar racing through 2024

Acura announced in early August that model year 2022 would be the last for its NSX and that it would offer a more powerful NSX Type S variant to mark the end of the supercar’s run.

Well, the NSX may disappear from showrooms in the not too distant future, but it will stay on the circuit for a few more years.

Acura unveiled an updated NSX GT3 Evo22 race car on Thursday that will enter races in 2022 and be homologated through 2024. He is eligible for multiple competitions including several approved by IMSA and SRO as well as Japan’s Super GT.

This is actually the second update to the NSX GT3 racer, which first appeared in 2017. The first update was introduced in 2019. It’s not clear if teams with previous versions will be able to upgrade to the new Evo22 spec.

What does the new specification bring? The most important changes include improved intercoolers for the 3.5-liter V6 with twin turbocharging of the car, revised spring rates and adjustments to the suspension geometry, larger fluid tank sizes for long-distance races, wheel system revisions for faster tire changes and the rain light required by the FIA. There are also new options for air conditioning and lighting systems.

Note that NSX racing cars skip the electric motors of their roadworthy counterparts, which means that they only get propulsion from the rear wheels. The racing cars also use a sequential 6-speed transmission instead of the 9-speed dual clutch transmission found on the street car.

JAS Motorsport will produce the racing cars in Milan, Italy, with chassis from the NSX plant in Marysville, Ohio.

The earlier cars have proven to be quite successful. The NSX GT3 and later the NSX GT3 Evo have achieved 25 class wins in IMSA GTD and SRO GT competitions. In other words, the new NSX GT3 Evo22 has some big footsteps to fill.
