Biden sets goals to increase electric car sales and fuel efficiency | Voice of america

U.S. President Joe Biden will sign an Executive Order on Thursday calling for new emissions standards for cars and setting a target for half of all new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric by 2030.

The White House said in a statement that the target would include battery electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles.

Leading automakers have made voluntary commitments in line with the administration’s goals.

Ford, General Motors and Stellantis announced in a joint statement that they want to have 40 to 50% of new electric vehicle sales by 2030.

Toyota’s North America CEO said his company would “do our part”.

The automakers said such a shift will require more than just making different types of cars. They said the government needs to support incentives for car buyers to choose electric vehicles, money to expand electric vehicle supply chains, and enough funds to build adequate charging stations across the country.
