Bride hitchhikes a police car to the wedding after being stranded on the side of the road

A bride had to ride to her wedding in a police car after being stranded on the side of the road on her big day.

Lydia Evans-Hughes, 29, stopped on a busy dual carriageway when the classic car she was driving to her wedding in Cheshire broke down on the A55.

But the bride managed to make a good appearance after a police officer offered to get her on time for the ceremony at St. Mary’s Church in Eccleston.

She had been enjoying the ride with parents Yvette and Alan Fletcher when the classic stalled near Chester on Friday (August 27).

Lydia, from Wrexham, North Wales, said: “I was at the reception point the night before.

“But when the car pulled away it was fine for the first five miles – then it just gave up.

“I was afraid of climbing over the guardrail and standing on the side of the road.”

Lydia Evans-Hughes and her parents, Yvette and Alan Fletcher, were almost halfway to the venue when the car broke down on the edge of a busy freeway

When the traffic officials arrived at the scene, the kind-hearted police inspector Matt Geddes offered the bridal party a ride.

“He asked how much gig we wanted to do and my dad said a big one, so he put on blues and twos,” Lydia explained.

“Because everything happened so quickly and how quickly they showed up, I wasn’t too late – it couldn’t have been planned any better.

“I’m just incredibly happy. All in all, it went really well.”

Lydia and partner Tidur Evans-Hughes, 31, were then able to say “yes” in front of family and friends after postponing the wedding twice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We wanted to get married in June last year, but it was delayed because of Covid, then in May of this year, but that was also postponed,” said Lydia.

“The fact that we finally have our day and that everyone could be there is simply priceless. It was such a nice end.

“The most incredible and sincere thanks to the police. What would we have done without them?”

North Wales Police Insp Geddes said he was “glad to have helped”.

“The somewhat unusual arrival caused some smiles after a stressful situation. Being stuck by the side of a busy A55 is not nice at the best of times,” he said.

“The bride looked beautiful, the sun was shining and she was just a little late. I wish the couple a wonderful day and a long and happy life together.”

Police also posted on Twitter about the incident, including a photo showing the stranded bridal shower on the roadside.

Traffic Wales wrote: “The course of true love never went smoothly …

“Our traffic cops arrived on site this afternoon to help a bride in a broken vehicle!

“We removed the vehicle while @NWPolice took them to the ceremony. I wish the bridal couple all the best! “

Civil servant Lydia and plumbing and heating engineer Tidur got engaged in November 2018 after a six-year romance.
