Britain’s first dynamic charging station for electric cars opens in Wolverhampton

Osprey Charging is behind the project, which uses a groundbreaking new technology called Kempower, which enables sites to host multiple high-performance chargers in a single location.

The site aims to allay fears of the 2030 ban on gasoline and diesel vehicles where charging points for electric vehicles are available.

The hub, which sits next to the A463, includes four powerful chargers that can add 160 kilometers of range in just ten minutes and will help meet demand for charges as reports show a 3,000 percent increase and 1.7 million Electric vehicles on the roads in the Midlands by 2030.

Other factors, such as Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone launched in June 2021 to combat air pollution, are accelerating the trend and encouraging motorists in the area to switch from old polluting gasoline and diesel vehicles to electric alternatives.

Public charging infrastructure, such as Osprey’s new hub in Wolverhampton, will help make the transition in the region quick and smooth.

Ian Johnston, Chief Executive of Osprey Charging, said: “Whether it’s gigafactories, electric vehicle construction or clean air zones, the West Midlands are leading the way in low carbon transportation and cementing their role at the heart of the UK’s green industrial revolution.

“The opening of our high performance charging hub in Wolverhampton, the first of ten charging stations under construction this year, brings the region back to the forefront of innovation and marks a crucial shift in the UK EV infrastructure as we accelerate towards mass adoption Vehicles.

“The location, which uses multiple high-powered chargers, will provide a blueprint for hundreds more across the UK, meaning there will be no waiting for drivers and an overall great customer experience.”

The hub will serve major traffic routes that more than 130,000 vehicles pass by daily, and there is also an on-site Costa Coffee that allows drivers to relax and use their facilities while charging.

Martin Pitt, a local electric vehicle driver, said, “I switched to an electric vehicle a little over two years ago and haven’t looked back since because it’s cheap to drive, great to drive, and most importantly, it’s much less damaging to the environment than gasoline and fuel Diesel vehicles.

“However, availability and easy charging keep many people from making the switch.

“Osprey’s new hub in Wolverhampton is great news for drivers in the Midlands and those on the move, and the sooner we have more projects like this, the better.”
