Burnley triples number of public electric vehicle charge points

Burnley has tripled the number of electric vehicle public charge points since 2019, says new data.

Figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) shows Burnley has also doubled the number of ‘rapid charging stations’ this year alone.

Public electric vehicle chargers are the charge points that are found in lampposts and motorway service stations, which are open to the public.

Q2 figures reveal that 1,721 new chargers were added to the UK’s public network between April 1 and July 1 2022, a six per cent increase in the total size of the network.

In Burnley, the number of charge points rose from 10 to over 30 within 3 years, according to the DfT data.

New AutoMotive is a transport research organization supporting the switch to electric vehicles in the UK.

Ben Nelmes, Co-founder and Head of Policy at New AutoMotive, said: “It’s great to see Burnley’s continued commitment to the switch to electric cars.

“The number of rapid charging stations within the area has doubled this year, showing there has never been a better time for local motorists to consider making the switch to an EV.

“We’ve also seen that the council is bidding for funding to continue the growth of the electric vehicle charging network in the area.

“By expanding the local charging network, the Council is making it easier for residents to make the switch to electric and to access the massive savings EVs offer on running costs.”
