COVID-19: 2 remanded in custody for street wedding in Bahrain

Cairo: Two people charged with attending a public wedding ceremony in violation of COVID-19 rules have been remanded in Bahrain, a prosecutor said as the kingdom tries to stem a surge in infection rates.

The police in the southern governorate had informed the public prosecutor’s office about a video that was circulating in which over 30 people were gathered on a street at a wedding reception without taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Two suspected participants were arrested and questioned about the crime. Prosecutors ordered that they be held pending further investigation and asked police to look for other suspects to be questioned and sent to a criminal court, the official added.

If convicted, they face up to three years in prison and a maximum sentence of 5,000 BD.

Bahrain recently stepped up its efforts to contain COVID-19. On Saturday, the kingdom registered 1,316 cases of infection, the highest daily rate since the virus broke out early last year. A total of 149,791 virus cases and 541 deaths have been confirmed in Bahrain to date.
