Dunbar couple celebrate platinum wedding anniversary

A DUNBAR couple celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary with a slice of cake and a family afternoon to toast their 70-year marriage.

John, 92, and Pearl Phillips from Dunbar celebrated their incredible milestone on August 25th at Blossom House, Belhaven Hospital, where John lives.

The couple met in 1950 at the General Post Office in Edinburgh, where John worked at the counter.

Pearl – who is 89 years old now – was 18 then and worked for the Inland Revenue.

The couple quickly fell in love and married a year later at a church ceremony in the Leith area.

They then invited family and friends to a wedding reception at Pearl’s mother’s home on Albion Place, near the Hibernian FC site.

Shortly after their wedding, the couple traveled to Dunkeld, Perth and Kinross to enjoy their honeymoon together.

John and Pearl toasted 70 years of marriage

The happy couple lived at Hoprig Farm Cottages in Cockburnspath before moving to a retirement home in Dunbar 11 years ago.

John has been at Belhaven Hospital for almost three years.

The couple have had wonderful lives together since they were married 70 years ago and have six children – Elisabeth, Michael, Susan, Anne, Carole and Katy.

They also have 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pearl said, “The secret to a long and happy marriage is simply to love one another.”

The Phillips family was delighted to attend a small celebration at Blossom House last month to celebrate the anniversary and said the staff were helpful in creating a safe and “beautiful” environment.

Despite the current Covid-19 restrictions, the family had a lovely afternoon.

The family thanked the staff at Blossom House for their time and hard work.
